The Car Scrappage Scheme
Older cars can pose a threat to the environment. Ideally they should be scrapped and replaced by newer and more fuel efficient cars. That is why the government have decided to run the car scrappage scheme. When you scrap an eligible car and buy a new one you could get £2,000 off the OTR price. The idea is great although we at Scrap Car Southwark believe there are flaws in the government's plan. For example, it dictates which new cars you can have in exchange for your old scrap car. Additionally, the old car you are having scrapped must meet the strict criteria set by the government. The government's requirements are listed below.
The old car you are scrapping must:
- Have been registered in the UK on or before 31st August, 1999
- Have been registered to you continuously for at least a year
- Have an in date (or within 14 days of expiry) tax disc when you purchase your new vehicle
- Be a small van or car weighing 3,500 kg or under
- Be insured when you order your new car
- Have a valid MOT (or within 14 days of expiry) on the old car at the time you order the new one
- Have a UK address on the registration certificate (also known as V5C)
- Be registered in your name with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or Driver and Vehicle Agency
Of course, few cars meet these strict requirements. Sadly, this has lead to a lot of disappointment in Southwark from people who were hoping to profit from scrapping their car.
